Commonly asked questions and answers:

Why are class dues only $25.00 per year (ie.24 cents per ,class)?
"This is not a business for me, so I don't charge $50 to $100 per month as other schools may. I see this as a ministry unto God and a service to the community. All dues are used for equipment, materials and ministry."

Why doesn't this school participate in karate tournaments?
"We participated on a limited basis in the past. However, as a result of a personal interview facilitated by Master Anthony Mirakian with Grand master Meitoku Yagi in the summer of 1990, there is a moratorium in effect. the Sensei's statement in part was that "...championships are only to gratify the ego. True karate is dangerous and for defense only."

What's the policy here regarding, promotions?
"Due to the fast pace of our society, we Americans often lack patience. Generally we want things 'yesterday' and instantly ! This affects quality. True karate is not instant. It is long, repetitious and requires sustained effort and commitment. One can become bored easily, which is why so many drop out. Students are reviewed periodically and at my discretion, to see if they should advance in rank. We promote very slowly in traditional Okinawan Gojuryu because our standards are high and the 12th Baptist Church Karate Dojo is not a homemade, dime a dozen or fly by night karate club. You will be taught here with the same traditional methods used in Okinawa, the home of karate. Do well in attendance and attitude and appropriate rank will be obtained."

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTOR
BROTHER RICHARD M. SCOTT, A  BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Brother Richard M. Scott received Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord at the age of 17. He is blessed with a beautiful wife, Glynnette and two daughters, Kristen and Coreen. He is a graduate of Boston University where he majored in economics and minored in religious studies.

Since 1976, he has served Commonwealth of Massachusetts. as a probation officer for the The Lord has used him in unique
ways. At the age of 23, he was the youngest probation officer appointed in the history of Boston's Suffolk Juvenile Court. Presently, he is an Assistant Chief Probation Officer at this court.

At the age of 19, he answered the call and was ordained a Deacon. This made him the youngest deacon in the history of Twelfth Baptist Church of Boston, the Reverend Doctor Michael E. Haynes, Pastor. He and his wife enjoy ministering to youth as Sunday Bible School teachers at the Twelfth Baptist Church of Roxbury.

Brother Scott began training with Sensei Kenneth Sampson, in the Meibukan Gojuryu Karate System to keep in shape, after hanging up his football cleats at Boston University in 1973. Years later, he heard of a karate class at a local church that was being taught by a Christian. The teacher was the late Ronald E. McNair, Astronaut. On February 20, 1976, after prayerful consideration and observation of Mr. McNair's class, Brother Scott was allowed to start a dojo (class) one as a part of the Twelfth Baptist Church Community Outreach Program. He is a Certified Black Belt and continues training with  Master Anthony Mirakian (9th Degree) of the Okinawan Karate-Do Academy in Watertown, Mass. Mr. Scott is a Sensei (Fifth degree BlackBelt). The Twelfth Baptist Church School of Okinawan Gojuryu Karate is not a karate class that just meets in a church, but an actual ministry that lifts up the name of Jesus Christ. The founding verse is I Corinthians 6:19 and 20. Over the years, the school has averaged sixty active students aged 6 to adult. All the classes are coed and welcome all who are willing and able. One does not have to be a Christian or church member to join. All have benefited from the physical fitness, discipline and confidence that this training can offer. But most important, has been the spiritual emphasis of the school. Whether through the Bible studies held during each class or the tract distributions. It is made clear that "God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish but have Everlasting Life.' John 3:16.

Brother Scott states, "Some initially are skeptical as to how karate could be used as a ministry for our Lord, and we Christians should test and beware of "other" Gospels. I teach my students to avoid violence and I encourage the discipline, athletic, and physical conditioning aspects of our training. As a Christian, it has been my prayer that by my Christian walk and the sharing of the Gospel, through this unique method, that people would be saved and the Body of Christ edified. God has answered my prayers exceedingly, abundantly above what has been asked." *Brother Scott is the author of two tracts designed for those with martial arts interests: "The One True Master", and "Learn the Ultimate in Self-Defense".
