Timothy was a young man in the ministry.  Paul was encouraging him in his faith and walk with Christ.  Being young is a wonderful and exciting thing.  God wants us to enjoy growing up.  In Ecclesiates 11:9 it states, "Be happy, young man (or woman), while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.  Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgement."   The Word of God speaks of enjoying life, but we are reminded that we are responsible for how we live.

On one hand Timothy was told not to let anyone put him down because of his youthfulness, but on the other hand Timothy was reminded of the responsibility he had as a Christian young person to set an example for the believers.  What a heavy responsibility!  He was to set an example in five ways.
                    1. what he said and how he said it
                    2. what he did and how he did it
                    3. how he loved and demonstrated that love
                    4. what he believed and how he expressed what he believed
                    5. what he was exposed to - he had to guard his heart and mind
against impure people, places and things.

What a challenge for Timothy and for us.  With the help of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ it can be done.  We can be an example even though we are young!
