Rev. Robert Nathaniel Fairfax served as the fifth pastor of Twelfth Baptist Church during a period of spiritual and institutional rebuilding. Known for his eloquence, pastoral care, and steadfast faith, he led the church following a season of transition and provided stable, heartfelt leadership.

Robert N. Fairfax was born in Hamilton, Ontario, around 1841. He pursued higher education at a college in St. Catharines, Ontario, and entered the Baptist ministry approximately two decades before his death. His early ministerial work included revival preaching and evangelism throughout Canada and the northeastern United States.

In the winter of 1875, he led a major revival at Queen Street Baptist Church in Toronto. His success led to his call to pastor Calvary Baptist Church in Plainfield, New Jersey, where he served for six years. He was then called to the Baptist Church in Haverhill, Massachusetts, where his effectiveness as a preacher and pastor further elevated his reputation. It was from Haverhill that he was called to the Twelfth Baptist Church in Boston.

Rev. Fairfax was formally installed as the fifth pastor of Twelfth Baptist Church in 1886. The installation service, held at the church on Phillips Street, drew a crowd that completely filled the sanctuary. The event featured a robust program of respected Black and white clergy and scholars, reflecting the esteem in which Fairfax was held and the importance of the moment for the congregation.

The installation exercises were conducted by L. B. Goodall, a student of Newton Theological Seminary. The service included:

  • Invocation by Rev. Jesse Harvell of Union Baptist Church, Bridgeport

  • Scripture Reading by Rev. J. Horatio Carter of Ebenezer Baptist Church

  • Prayer by Rev. Andrew Chamberlain of New Bedford

  • Installation Sermon by Rev. A. J. Gordon, D.D., of Clarendon Street Baptist Church

  • Installation Prayer by Professor Heman Lincoln of Newton Theological Seminary

  • Charge to the Pastor by Rev. Dr. Bosworth of Cambridge

  • Charge to the Church by Rev. Mr. Dungale of New Bedford

  • Benediction by Rev. Fairfax himself1

This diverse and ecumenical assembly of clergy from across the region marked the occasion as not only significant to Twelfth Baptist but to the wider Christian and civic community in Boston.

Rev. Fairfax brought spiritual depth, intellectual rigor, and emotional warmth to the pulpit. Described by contemporaries as “a splendid minister,” he poured “the fullness of his soul” into his service to the church and the city. His sermons inspired the congregation, and his pastoral leadership offered stability after previous transitions in leadership.

Unfortunately, by 1889, Fairfax’s health began to fail due to consumption (tuberculosis). In 1890, he relocated to Thomasville, Georgia, in hopes of healing. Sadly, he passed away that same year, at age 49, after an extended illness.

Despite his death occurring far from Boston, the depth of his relationship with Twelfth Baptist Church was so profound that his remains were returned to the city. His funeral was held at the church he had led—a powerful testament to how deeply rooted he had become in the spiritual and communal life of TBC.

Rev. Fairfax left behind a widow and four children: Lottie, Robert, Willie, and Martha.
